PMP vs. CAPM — Which Should You Pursue First?

The CAPM is designed for professionals with fewer than three years of project experience or those who manage projects without formal leadership responsibility. The PMP requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher (or global equivalent) with at least 3 years of project leadership experience, along with 35 hours of project management education/training, which can be earned through our PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) program. In terms of career impact, the PMP commands significantly higher salary premiums and is required for senior-level roles. If you already meet PMP eligibility, there is no need to pursue CAPM first. CAPM is most valuable for recent graduates, career changers, and project team members building toward leadership.
